Hill Barn Golf Club Men's Section
HOGGS Captain 2026/2027
My name is John Young and I am pleased to be captain of the HOGGS for 2026. I will have been a member of Hill Barn Golf Club for 10 years having previously been a member of Rustington, Littlehampton (briefly), West Chiltington and Pyecombe. I have been playing with the HOGGS since 2021.
I have always been keen on playing sport, basically anything with a ball. I played football and cricket from an early age but also rugby, tennis and squash with a bit of hockey and volleyball thrown in. Golf is not one of the sports I played despite living across the road from a golf club (Scarborough North Cliff). Largely because there was no one in the family who played and I was too busy playing the other sports previously mentioned. Golf started with the odd game through friends at University then work and started playing regularly when I retired from playing football.

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing golf in the HOGGS section in the last five years and always find that whoever I’m paired with brings jovial banter, friendly chat, a good golfing challenge followed with a well-earned coffee in the bar afterwards. There are also visits to parts of the course I’ve not necessarily visited before.
We have two extra clubs who we will be playing matches against this year and it would be good to see more names on the lists for our matches. These matches are very sociable, friendly and challenging events and they provide the opportunity to show off our wonderful course and to play a range of other different courses. For those of you who don’t like getting up early – it’s not even once a week throughout the summer. For those of you who feel that they don’t want to let others down – you won’t – we all make mistakes on the golf course and these matches are just a bit of fun, friendship and a good challenge.
My chosen charity for the year is Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. And if you’re over 50, (which we all are) or you’re Black, or you have a family history of the disease, then your risk is even higher. Every donation, no matter how big or small, is helping fund vital research and provide support services for men and their families. Every pound we are able to raise helps create a future where ‘No Man Dies of Prostate Cancer”.
